Basics of lubrication

• In the 21st Century, Lubrication is largely invisible.
Most of the products we use everyday are “Lubed for Life” based upon the “Life Cycle” of today’s disposable designs.

• Polaris Products however, are not designed to be disposable. Proper Fluid

Maintenance intervals using only Pure Polaris Lubricants are necessary for the service life of the product.

• In the simplest form, the purpose of lubrication is to prevent metal to metal contact.

• Without lubrication a number of undesirable things happen:

  1) Heat caused by friction causes engine parts to distort

  2) Surface wear caused by metal to metal contact

  3) Catastrophic failure as a result of 1 and 2

• Lubrication also performs a number of other equally important duties while preventing metal to metal contact:

  1) Heat control. Oil facilitates the transfer of heat from hot areas to areas better able to dissipate the excess heat. In some Polaris engines the oil is actually used in place of glycol based coolant.

  2) Cleaning. Oil is the refuse container in 4 Stroke applications. Combustion residue is collected in the oil and carried to the filter while the non-particulate residue in neutralized and held in suspension.

  3) Sealing. Oil acts as a seal between tight fitting moving parts to hold combustion chamber gases in place.
