Basics of Lubrication for Greases

• Grease is just a different form of lubrication and its basic function is unchanged- prevent metal to metal contact.

• Grease is manufactured by mixing specially formulated lubricating oils with thickening agents. The thickeners absorb the oil and then release it under pressure only to re-absorb the oil when the pressure is removed.

• In addition to preventing metal to metal contact, grease is required to:
- Seal the area preventing dirt and water from entering
- Resist leakage, dripping, or throw off
- Not stiffen or loosen dramatically with temperature changes
- Protect against rust and corrosion
